Sir Bobby Moore (1941-1993)

For over 10 years, he captained England’s national football team, leading them to victory in the 1966 World Cup.

 

William Penn (1644-1718)

The entrepreneur, philosopher and founder of the US state of Pennsylvania was educated at Chigwell School.

 

George Shillibeer (1797-1866)

The inventor of the “omnibus”, which has evolved into London’s iconic double-decker, is buried in St Mary’s churchyard.

 

Sally Gunnell (b. 1966)

A former world champion & current British champion in the 400m hurdles, born in Chigwell. She attended the West Hatch High School in Chigwell.

 

Kate Silverton (b. 1970)

Attended school in Chigwell. One of the best known BBC presenters, she has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

Katie Griffiths (b. 1989)

The famous actress, for her role as Chloe in the BBC 1 drama series Waterloo Road, was born in Chigwell.

 

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

The English literary  genius lived nearby and was a frequent visitor to Chigwell’s Kings Head and Maypole pubs.

 

Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

Perhaps Britain’s greatest politician, he was MP for Chigwell for 25 years.
