Description of Tour:
Step back in time and experience the romance of travel from a time gone by as you soak up a stunning Essex countryside on this award winning Tour.
The Epping Ongar Railway is a Heritage railway, run by a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers, in North Weald Ongar, Essex, England.
The Tour includes a return ticket, starting at Epping underground Station Central line to and via vintage bus to North Weald and Steam train to Ongar
This experience is a self- guided tour. However, a tour guide is usually present to meet and greet customers at Epping Underground station before boarding the 1st of their Vintage bus to North Weald for the start of their Steam train journey.
Below is a representative itinerary. All customers receive a detailed final itinerary, two weeks prior to the tour, as well as information for your tour and other things you can include to enhance your experience in Ongar.

TIMETABLE & ITINERARY
10:15am: Arrive at Epping station with your itinerary and meet your tour guide.
10:25am: Board your vintage bus for the start of your journey to North Weald for your steam train experience. North Weald is a village in the civil parish of North Weald Bassett, the Epping Forest District of the County of Essex.
10:45am: Arrival at North Weald Station for your steam train experience
10:45am – 10:55am: Enjoy a comfort break at North Weald Station.
10: 55 am Board your steam train for the journey to Ongar, the old market town with an amazing history, quaint streets, and shops.
11:00 am: Journey to Ongar on steam train begins.
11:20 am: Arrival at Ongar and Comfort Break.
11:30am- 1:15 pm Afternoon Tea at the Kings Head, 177 High Street, Ongar,CM5 9JG
OPTION: Visit the amazing Greensted Church, the oOldest wooden church in Europe. Guided tour of this historic iconic attraction and explore the beautiful grounds and surrounding English countryside. The
cost of transport and guided tour is £10 per person. .
explore Ongar; shops and enjoy the history and local park opposite the station. Have fun checking out the local pubs, famous cheese shop, wine stores and museum.
Your afternoon tea at The Kings Head will follow the church visit.
1.15pm: Depart Kings Head for Station
1.30 pm: Board your steam train from Ongar station for the return journey to North Weald; stay on the train for your second journey through Epping Forest and back to North Weald.
2:00 pm: Steam Train Ride through Epping Forest
2.15 pm: Return and Explore North Weald Station.
2.30 or 3.00 or 3.30pm or 4:00pm: Board vintage bus back to Epping underground station, where the tour ends.

Come out of Ongar station and turn left on to the High Street.
Walk for 7 minutes and the Kings Head, is on your right.
It is a 2 minute walk from Budworth Hall, a major land mark on the High street.
To assist you, Alun Hague will meet you outside Epping Station from 10.10am and will be holding a multicoloured golf umbrella.
He will board the vintage bus at 10.20am with you and will assist you at the ticket office in case of difficulty at the North weald Epping Ongar Railway station.
On your arrival at Ongar station, he will point you in the right direction towards The Kings Head Restaurant. He will then depart.
Below is your amended itinerary.
Your tour starts at Epping underground station (CM16 4HW) at 10.20am.
We have planned the tour timetable with you, as independent travellers without a tour guide, but Alun Hague, our tour guide, will be around to assist in case of difficulty. We have provided a selection of interesting things to compliment the steam train ride.
Your itinerary is below.
Your entry passes and things to do in Ongar, has been sent to you. At North Weald station, you will collect your train ticket and your free copy of Ongar Town Guide from the ticket office staff. They will require your name.
On arrival at the Kings Head, you will sit in the front reception\lounge until escorted to your table by a member of staff.
The Kings Head Restaurant will operate a flexible arrival time from 11.30- 12.30pm so you can stagger your arrival time but you will need to leave by 1.15pm to ensure you catch your steam train at Ongar at 1.30pm.
A fully licensed bar, can provide both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks; prosecco and wine and a la carte menu are available. These can be purchased separately.
Your cream tea will consists of either 1 large scone or 2 medium sized scones, butter, jam and cream, and tea or coffee. Afternoon tea consists of 3 rounds of sandwiches (egg mayonnaise, tuna with cucumber; cheese and chutney), 2 scones, cake, butter, cream, jam and tea or coffee. Teas and coffees are served by the pot. Refill are available but will be self served.
Vegetarian options are available as part of the afternoon tea option and booked in advance.
Guests who have booked for our cream tea can upgrade to have an afternoon tea with prior arrangement. Contact us for more information.
Taxis – If you want to visit Greenstead Church (oldest wooden church in Europe), you can catch a taxi which is a 10 minute ride from Ongar station costing £7. They can also wait for you and bring you back to The Kings Head for your cream tea or afternoon tea.

On special Events Days, large crowds have known to attend the events. Please plan your journey and allow plenty of time for this. The Epping Ongar Railway website will have details and dates of these events.
- Dogs are allowed, but must be well behaved and on leads at all times. We regret that dogs are not permitted in the location where the afternoon tea is being served, however, speak to the tour guide if you are concerned.
- Please make sure that you bring your confirmation email or voucher with you
- The railway buffet car is occasionally opened and you can purchase teas or coffee or alcohol.
- Locomotives for the three journeys are interchangeable between steam and diesel.
- The train company can at short notice, change the timetable.
Kindly let us know if you have any dietary, mobility or any other issues.
We recommend comfortable shoes, warm clothing, an umbrella and a bottle of water.
Cancellations – 48 hours notice is required otherwise there will not be a refund or a reschedule of a booked tour.
