Full Tour Description:

Step back in time and experience the romance of travel from a time gone by as you soak up a stunning Essex countryside on this Award winning tour.

The Epping Ongar Railway is a Heritage railway, run by a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers, in North Weald Ongar, Essex, England.

The Tour includes a return ticket, starting at Epping Central Line Train Station where you will be met by our knowledgeable Tour Guide, and start your journey with a vintage bus ride to the village of North Weald; a village in the civil parish of North Weald Bassett in  the Epping Forest District of the County of Essex. From here you will journey on the heritage steam railway. This train ride will take you through Epping Forest amidst iconic English countryside scenes that all ages can enjoy.

ITINERARY

Meet your dedicated Guide at Epping Train Station (Central Line underground Station) at 10.10

10:10am: Arrive at Epping station to meet your tour guide.

10:25am: With your tour guide board your vintage bus 339 for the start of your journey to North Weald for your steam train experience.  North Weald is a village in the civil parish of North Weald Bassett the Epping Forest District of the County of Essex.

10:40am: Arrival at North Weald / Epping - Ongar Railway Station for your steam train experience

10:40am – 10:55am: With your tour guide enjoy a short guided tour of Epping Ongar Railway Station.

10:55am: With your tour guide board your steam train for the journey to Ongar, the old market town with an amazing history, quaint streets, and shops.

11:00am: With your tour guide journey to Ongar on steam train begins.

11:20am: With your tour guide arrival at Ongar.

11:20 – 12:15pm: With your tour guide visit the Greensted Church the oldest Wooden Church in Europe and explore Ongar.

12:15pm - 13:15pm With your tour guide enjoy your delicious afternoon tea which consist of 3 rounds of sandwiches with a choice of egg mayonnaise, tuna or salmon, cheese, Scones, slice of cake, butter, cream jam and lots of tea or coffee  in Ongar at Historic Zinc Arts & Community Theatre.

13:30pm: With your tour guide board your steam train from Ongar station for the return journey to North Weald; stay on the train for your second journey through Epping Forest and back to North Weald.

14:15pm: Free time at North Weald / Epping Ongar Railway

15:00pm With your tour guide board vintage bus back to Epping underground station, where the tour ends.

Your Tour begins with:

  1. A journey on a vintage bus ride to the village of North Weald, where you will be guided around the station and learn it’s history.  On special events day, you can participate in the fun events available.
  2. With your tour guide, you will board the steam train for the steam journey to Ongar, the ancient market town. The steam line was originally purchased by the Great Eastern Railway Company and used as a goods station to transport farm produce to London. It eventually became a passenger line and part of the London Underground, but it was closed in 1994. It then re-opened as a Heritage line
  3. At Ongar, you have the opportunity to be guided around Greensted Church and  its surrounding beautiful countryside.
  4. You will then have the opportunity to purchase locally produced gifts, home made honey, and various quaint items.
  5. From here you will be taken to see the blue plaque on the Livingstone Cottages where David Livingstone, is reputed to have lived.
  6. Then be treated to your sumptuous and delicious afternoon tea back in North Weald. Please note, this, will not be on the train.
  7. The 3rd part of your tour, will be a delightful Heritage steam train ride through Epping Forest
  8. After returning to North Weald, you will board the vintage bus for your final journey back to Epping to connect to the London underground.
  9. Your tour ends at Epping Station.
