Full Tour Description:

Step back in time and experience the romance of travel from a time gone by as you soak up a stunning Essex countryside on this Award winning tour.

The Epping Ongar Railway is a Heritage railway, run by a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers, in North Weald Ongar, Essex, England.

The Tour includes a return ticket, starting at Epping Central Line Train Station where you will be met by our knowledgeable Tour Guide, and start your journey with a vintage bus ride to the village of North Weald; a village in the civil parish of North Weald Bassett in  the Epping Forest District of the County of Essex. From here you will journey on the heritage steam railway. This train ride will take you through Epping Forest amidst iconic English countryside scenes that all ages can enjoy.

Come out of Ongar station and turn left on to the High Street.

Walk for 7 minutes and the Kings Head, is on your right.

It is a 2 minute walk from Budworth Hall, a major land mark on the High street.

Tour Guide

To assist you, Alun Hague will meet you outside Epping Station from 10.10am and will be holding a multicoloured golf umbrella.

He will board the vintage bus at 10.20am with you and will assist you at the ticket office in case of difficulty at the North weald Epping Ongar Railway station.

On your arrival at Ongar station, he will point you in the right direction towards The Kings Head Restaurant. He will then depart.

Below is your amended itinerary.

Your tour starts at Epping underground station (CM16 4HW) at 10.20am.

We have planned the tour timetable with you, as independent travellers without a tour guide,  but Alun Hague, our tour guide, will be around to assist in case of difficulty.  We have provided a selection of interesting things to compliment the steam train ride.

Your itinerary is below.

Your entry passes and things to do in Ongar, has been sent to you.  At North Weald station, you will collect your train ticket and your free copy of Ongar Town Guide from the ticket office staff.  They will require your name.


  1. 10.20; Epping underground station (CM16 4HW)
  1. 25am: catch vintage bus 339 to North Weald station; 10mins ride.

10:45: Go to the ticket office at North Weald station to collect ticket for the steam train. They will ask for your name, itinerary and entry pass.

1045-55: Comfort break; gift shop at North Weald station.

  1. 11am; Catch steam train to Ongar.
  2. 11.15: Arrives in Ongar.
  3. 11.20: Free Time in Ongar to explore the area.
  4. 12:15-13:15: Cream tea or Afternoon Tea at The Kings Head, 171 High Street, Chipping Ongar, CM5 9JG. – See details below. Will need to tell them your name and show the itinerary.
  5. 13:30: Arrive at Ongar Station (CM5 9BN) to board steam train to North Weald and Epping Forest. 10 minutes delay, remain on train for Epping Forest.
  6. 14:15-15:00: Free time to explore Epping Ongar Railway (CM5 9BN). Gift shops, special events, marquee...
  7. 15:00 or 15:30 or 16:00; Catch Vintage Bus 339 back to Epping Underground Station where the tour ends.

On arrival at the Kings Head, you will sit in the front  reception\lounge  until escorted to your table by a member of staff.

The Kings Head Restaurant will operate a flexible arrival time from 11.30- 12.30pm  so you can stagger your arrival time but you will need to leave by 1.15pm to ensure you  catch your steam train at Ongar at 1.30pm.

A fully licensed bar, can provide both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks; prosecco and wine and a la carte menu are available.  These can be purchased separately.

Your cream tea will consists of either 1 large scone or 2 medium sized scones,  butter, jam and cream, and tea or coffee.  Afternoon tea consists of 3 rounds of sandwiches (egg mayonnaise, tuna with cucumber; cheese and chutney), 2 scones, cake, butter, cream, jam and tea or coffee. Teas and coffees are served by the pot.  Refill are available but will be self served.

Vegetarian options are available as part of the afternoon tea option and booked in advance.

Guests who have booked for our cream tea can upgrade to have an afternoon tea with prior arrangement. Contact us for more information.

If you would like to upgrade from Cream Tea to Afternoon Tea, there is an additional cost of £5 per person. This needs to be paid in advance. Our bank details are as follows:

Taxis – If you want to visit Greenstead Church (oldest wooden church in Europe), you can catch a taxi which is a 10 minute ride from Ongar station costing £7. They can also wait for you and bring you back to The Kings Head for your cream tea or afternoon tea.

Please Note

On special Events Days, large crowds have known to attend the events.  Please plan your journey and allow plenty of time for this. The Epping Ongar Railway website will have details and dates of these events.

  • Dogs are allowed, but must be well behaved and on leads at all times. We regret that dogs are not permitted in the location where the afternoon tea is being served, however, speak to the tour guide if you are concerned.
  • Please make sure that you bring your confirmation email or voucher with you
  • The railway buffet car is occasionally opened and you can purchase teas or coffee or alcohol.
  • Locomotives for the three journeys are interchangeable between steam and diesel.
  • The train company can at short notice, change the timetable.

We recommend comfortable shoes, warm clothing, an umbrella and a bottle of water.

Cancellations – 48 hours notice is required otherwise there will not be a refund or a reschedule of a booked tour.
